Hammer Mills Compare to Roller Mills

Hammer Mills Compare to Roller Mills
Roller milling was the traditional method of preparing cereals and fodder for on-farm consumption by livestock. Today, millers have the option of using either method. In recent years, hammer mill diameters have gradually increased, which obviously allows for greater peripheral beater tip speed at lower revolutions. Consequently, power consumption levels in such hammer mills have been reduced to a minimum. A very popular chose in the industry is the hammer mill. The choice of which touse depends upon the unique requirements of every individual situation.

Hammer mills
Hammer mills accomplish size reduction by impacting a slow moving target, such as a cereal grain, with a rapidly moving hammer and the incoming material. A hammer mill consists of a rotor assembly, consisting of two or more rotor plates fixed to a main shaft, enclosed in some form of grinding chamber. The actual working mechanisms are the hammers and the screen or grinding plates that encircle the rotor.
Roller Mills
Roller mills can consist of a single, double, or triple pair of rolls that are stacked and enclosed in a steel frame. Feed passing between the rolls is sheared and compressed to reduce the particle size depending on the speed differential between the rolls. Essentially, a roller mill grinder will utilize rolls from 9 to 12 inches in diameter operating at differential speeds. To achieve a uniform final particle size with minimal, fines, the roller mill must have the right roll surface, roll speed ratio, and roll gap for application.
Hammer mills Advantages
▷Easy to use and maintenance
▷Process a wide range of materials, it can work with Grain, High fiber, High protein material to very fine grinding results.
▷Less initial purchase cost compared to roller mills
Roller mills Advantages
▷Energy Savings: More tons materials processed per kWh
▷Uniform particle-size distribution: More uniform,less fines & oversize particles
▷Little noise and dust generation
▷Less auxiliary equipment to maintain
The hammer mill is a relatively simple machine and requires a fairly low degree of skill in regards to both the operation and maintenance. They are a good all-around choice but have limitations such as fine grind sizes. However, roller mills also has more superiority in energy costs, product quality concerns, and environmental issues.
